Jay Z's stolen master recording found in California
A stolen collection of Jay Z's master recordings, worth $15 to $20 million has been discovered after 14 years with his former music producer in California. Police are currently with the tapes but the thief might be standing trial for extortion and theft.
A producer named Chauncey Mahan, who worked with Jay from 1998-2002, was picked up and questioned last Friday in connection with the alleged plot.
If you are lost, here's a recap - Jay Z's Roc-A-Fella Records recorded a boatload of master recordings between 1998 and 2002. In 2002 the masters went missing and the rapper and his people assumed they were lost.
Mahan apparently had a number of the masters in his Northridge, CA storage facility. Law enforcement sources state that he allegedly contacted Live Nation - which has a joint venture with Jay Z called Roc Nation - and said he would either let the tapes go up for auction or give them the tapes for a $100,000 "storage fee." Reports claim Mahan eventually agreed to take $75,000.
According to TMZ, Mahan went to the storage facility to seal the deal with Jay Z's people on Friday. Little did he know the LAPD had been contacted by Jay Z's people and showed up. The cops then detained Mahan and he agreed to come into the station for questioning. He also agreed to let the LAPD take possession of the tapes until a judge determines ownership.
Good news is the thief was not arrested, but sources say the Beverly Hills PD is investigating the extortion allegations because that's where Live Nation is based.
Jay Z's people have filed a grand larceny complaint with the NYPD same Friday and that investigation is currently ongoing.
